Buddhist temples in Japan are shrouded in incense smoke- rich plumes of perfumed, whispery smoke shroud the atmosphere with a pretty smell and a sense of spirituality. Temple attendees ritually cleanse themselves by lighting sticks and wafting the rich smoke in their faces.
